Pastor’s Desk for

July 2005

Welcome to Summer!

Enjoy it while it lasts, because it’ll be gone before you know it.  Opportunities are like that as well.  We seldom know when God will present one, and if we’re not prepared to receive it, it slips right by before we realize it.  Well, when it came to our latest opportunity, those of us who were ready (and able, of course) shared in a wonderfully enriching experience at our first annual Red Cross blood drive.

The willingness of the donors to give, as well as the disappointment in the eyes of those who could not, was inspiring to me.  These individuals took time out of their busy, crazy schedules to participate in a cause they believed in – life!  (That is, of course, what giving blood is all about...)  I was especially inspired by the dedication of the Red Cross volunteers, who arrived two hours early to begin setting up and then, after clean-up and tear-down, went on their way long after the last patron left.  They barely took the time to grab a snack during this whole time.  They were about fulfilling the mission they were sent to fulfill.  These folks dedicate their time and energies to the cause of sustaining life.

If we are truly taking up the yoke of our elder brother, Jesus, so do we.  Of course, the life we promote is far greater than simply what this human existence can offer.  We are ambassadors for everlasting life in the kingdom of Almighty God!  As such, do we realize the importance of our dedication?  We are called to let the light of our Savior shine forth from us as a beacon on a hill (Matt. 5:16).  As the angel of God told the apostles when releasing them from prison, so he speaks to us as well…  "Go, stand in the temple courts, and tell the people the full message of this new life." (Acts 5:20)

As I officially take up the responsibility of Senior Pastor in the Loudon congregation, knowing the weight of responsibility that comes with it, I pray for the strength that only God can provide.  My prayer is also that each of you will be encouraged and inspired to take a more active roll in the Gospel work we have been called to.  Opportunities to serve will continue to present themselves, and they will most likely be disguised as work.  May each of us be prepared to step in and serve as the situations present themselves.  May we keep our shoulders firmly pressed against the yoke that Jesus offers.

In His service,

Pastor Thom
